Upon awakening, Rothe did not know how long it had been since he was thrown into this hellish place. It seemed like a very long time ago that he was brought down here. In the blackness he could not ascertain whether it was night or day. He could feel the emptiness of his stomach and his mouth was very dry. If only someone were available for him to make an inquiry, but it soon became obvious that he was not going to see much of anything or anyone for that matter.

It became apparent that he was not well received on this ship. More times than not, the sailors he did see, during the long voyage, would ignore him completely or hurl insults at him. Even the seaman that brought him food would sometimes just dump it into his cell.

They had not removed the chains he was put into, and his wrists and ankles were beginning to bleed. This brought the rats from their places of hiding and made it impossible for Rothe to get any rest. If he fell asleep he would be awaken by a rat chewing on a bloody area. After a couple of days of this, he tore off his vest, tearing it into strips, he used it, along with some of his drinking water, to clean the wounds. He then used other strips to stuff between the cuffs and his raw skin in hopes that this would stem the bleeding and the rats, hopefully, would leave him alone. With some thought while fending the rats off in the blackness of the hold, he began to assume that when the seaman brought him his food that it must be daylight and the rats were scared off. He also learned that he could rest during the day when the rats were in hiding and be rested when the night came and they came out of hiding.

Before long, the rats did not bother him as much. Only when he had his food thrown at him, and he had to compete with them for the meager amount of food that there was, that he even noticed them anymore.

It came as a surprise when two sailors came down to the brig and released him from his cell. They proceeded to push him up the ladder to the main deck. The glare of the light was very hard on his eyes and almost blinded him. It took several minutes before he became able to see.

Looking out over the ocean, he saw that they were nearing a small island. The majority of the island was well covered with trees and had a long sandy beach on the island side of a cove that was protected by jagged rocks. It looked to him as though one end of the island consisted of a high jagged peak.. It was to this island that Rothe could see that they were sailing.

The sailors pushed him along the deck until they came to where Captain Connery was standing, near the starboard rail.
